Try a healthy detox

While there is no scientific evidence to show that the body needs to detox, a detox offers an opportunity to refocus and establish clear dietary goals that can help empower you to make healthy food choices. A dietary detox can also result in the loss of a few kilograms, which can be motivation to maintain the program.

An effective detox can simply involve cutting out processed foods and stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol for a few days or a week. Often this is all you need to feel refreshed, re-energised and lighter, as your body rids itself of excessive fluid that can accumulate when too much salt and fatty food is eaten daily.

The first step towards a successful detox is re-establishing optimal hydration levels. Drink two to three litres of water as well as herbal teas, which rehydrate your cells and flush out your digestive tract. After one or two days of this hydrating routine you will notice your skin and eyes appear brighter and clearer and your stomach flatter.

Next load up your diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Aim for three cups of salad or vegies each day - a vegetable-based soup works well - and two or three pieces of fruit. Vegie juices are another good way to give your body a vitamin boost. You can also add wholegrains such as beans and oats to your soups and salads for bulk and dietary fibre as well as some lean protein for essential nutrients including iron, zinc and essential fats.

Oily fish such as tuna or salmon work well for lunches and dinners, as does plain grilled fish and chicken breast, which are both extremely lean meats. Between meals, try snacking on nuts, seeds and fresh fruits, which are all nutritious and light foods that will complement your detox plan well. While detox plans are extremely healthy, strict detox programs that eliminate all bread, cereal, dairy, pasta and rice should not be followed for more than a week, as they are generally too low in kilojoules and key nutrients to allow the body to function optimally for any extended period of time.
